Monumentenwacht Noord-Brabant

Smarter inspections for sustainable heritage

Monumentenwacht Noord-Brabant (NWMB) is committed to preserving built heritage, historic interiors, and archaeological monuments. They support owners and managers with maintenance and restoration, promote sustainable, high-quality management, and place monument policy on the administrative agenda. Their core task is monitoring the state of maintenance of cultural heritage and reporting on it. MWNB contributes to the effective provision of information about the preservation of Brabant's heritage and promotes the "Monumentenwacht method" nationally and internationally.

“We join our forces to provide innovative insights into opportunities to use technological innovations to preserve our built heritage.”
The collaboration between Monumentenwacht Noord-Brabant and DEMO Consultants
For the inspections and recommendations that MWNB carries out, it's important to gain a good understanding of the buildings they inspect. For this purpose, the monument wardens use RE Suite for Monuments. Maintaining monuments is a specialized field, and DEMO contributes to the accurate mapping of these monuments. To effectively use the software, DEMO has provided training to several employees.
The collaboration has deepened further through participation in the European Inperso research project. This research addresses the complex challenge of deep renovation and how to respond to the specific needs of stakeholders involved. Among other things, low-carbon renovation models are being developed and advanced components such as smart walls, windows, and sun blinds are being implemented. DEMO included the Monumentenwacht Noord-Brabant in the international consortium, guided them through the application process, introduced them to the EU research landscape, and provided further support throughout the research project.
The challenge: outdated software and the need for on-site flexibility
Before the collaboration, MWNB was already using a custom-built program, which didn't allow for innovation. They were searching for a flexible software partner open to customized modifications and the ability to capture inspection data directly on-site using a digital device like an iPad. This solution had to meet the needs of several independently operating monument watch organizations. This created challenges that led to a workable and future-proof solution — now used by five provincial monument watch organizations.
This article was written in collaboration with Sanne de Koning, director and manager of Monumentenwacht Noord-Brabant.
Further software development
MWNB is actively providing input for the further development of RE Suite for Monuments. This will make the inspection of larger and more complex monumental buildings easier and more user-friendly.
